There are two ways of getting to Shetland, this is either by air or by sea.
Daily flights are run by Loganair from Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh. This makes it easy to connect from further afield. Flight times are typically around an hour from Aberdeen and an additional half an hour from Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Alternatively, there are daily overnight sailings from Aberdeen to Lerwick. The ferry takes 14-16hrs (depending on the day and if a call in to Orkney is scheduled). The ferry, operated by Northlink is often described as a mini cruise with ensuite cabins, bars and restaurants.
Getting Around Shetland
Shetland has a very good public transport infrastructure with regular journeys to most places. Getting around Lerwick and some of the closer villages is very easy however some of the further afield locations are only accessible by car.
Car hire offers flexibility and we’d recommend it where possible. Find more information about getting around here.
